Add around 250 milliliters of water and allow it to boil for around 5 minutes. Then add 10 drops of this solution to around 75 milliliters of water. Then now add iodine such that the colour is a dark purple. Put around 5 milliliters of this solution to a 15 milliliter test tube and add the fruit juice that you want to test. The lighter the solution the higher is the Vitamin C content. The color changes as to the content of Vitamin C in the fruit juice.

The next question that comes up is exactly how much iron is found in breakfast cereals. The iron that is found in breakfast cereals is not a combination with any compound but is in its main element. Iron is sprayed on the outer portion of the cereal flakes. You can actually separate the iron in the cereal with a magnet. Iron is very necessary to build up a healthy diet. It is found in poultry, fish and meat.

Take a weighing scale. Then crush around half a cup cereal in a baggie till they are half their size. Pour this in a bowl. Add a cup of hot water and then stir it. Take a 3 inch bar magnet which is neither black nor grey. But take care you don’t use a horseshoe magnet. Then take a magnet in the mix of cereal and stir for some five minutes. See that you don’t hit the bottom of the bowl. Remove the magnet and take the iron filings that have clung to the magnet.

Take the case of apples, for example. The apples ripen and the starch in the fruit makes it change to sugar. It gives the fruit its sweetness. The levels of starch in the apples are normally measure by dipping a part of the apple in a solution of iodine. The starch in the fruit reacts with the solution of iodine and gives the entire solution a black blue colour in such a pattern such that each fruit gets its characteristic. Red Delicious apples are seen to lose their starch in a ring pattern and golden delicious apples are seen to have an uneven pattern.

The iodine solution has to be fresh always. The solution has to be kept in a dark bottle and should be away from light. It is poisonous and so treated apples should not be consumed. Even pets should be kept away from the testing. Take around 10 grams of potassium iodide in around 10 ml of water. Add around 2.5 grams of crystals of iodine when it is dissolved and shake the entire solution well such that the crystals are totally dissolved. Dilute this mixture with water and get around a quart of the solution.
